Ravel’s music is known for his fascination with exotic themes, from the Javanese gamelan to folksongs from across Europe. Works such as Shéhérazade and the Rapsodie espagnole brought a more colourful world to French musical life, whilst in L’enfant et les sortilèges and the Violin Sonata he turned to America for inspiration.
